LA JOLLA, Calif. (3/23/25) – Arkansas State men’s golf junior Thomas Schmidt is tied for the individual lead as the Red Wolves are tied for eighth among 20 teams following the first round of play at Torrey Pines and the UC San Diego Invitational.
Schmidt carded a 1-under par 71 to tie Jake Roth of Lehigh and Aidan Thomas of New Mexico State for the individual lead. Four other players finished even-par on the opening round with the course average for the opening round at 78.55. Schmidt’s round included an eagle on the par-5 sixth and three birdies against four bogeys.
Playing as an individual, Chris Somerfield is tied for 32nd at 5-over par 77. Milan Reed turned in a 6-over 78 to tie for 42nd while Jake Wallis and Jack Maxey were 7-over par 79 to tie for 57th. Jake Lile was 8-over par 80 on the opening round to tie for 75th.
Tied with North Dakota State at 19-over par 307, the Red Wolves are just three strokes back of fifth place UC Irvine. Cal State Northride and New Mexico State hold the team lead at 13-over par 301 with Sacramento State and UC Riverside two strokes back at 15-over par 303. UC San Diego and George Mason are tied for sixth at 18-over par 306 with Seattle rounding out the top 10 at 20-over par 308.
