MADISON, Miss. (4/24/24) – Thomas Schmidt claimed runner-up honors and for the first time in program history, Arkansas State won the stroke play portion of the Sun Belt Conference Men’s Golf Championship at Annandale Golf Club.
The individual medalist was crowned at the end of stroke play, which saw Schmidt tied for first place with South Alabama’s Hugo Thyr after both players shot a combined 4-under par 212. Thyr defeated Schmidt on the third hole of a sudden death playoff to earn the title.
A-State advances to the tournament semifinals for the fourth time since the league has used a match play format to determine a team champion. It is the first appearance in match play since winning the Sun Belt title in 2019. The Red Wolves wrapped up play with a 2-over par 290 to total 5-under par 859, 11 strokes better than ULM for second. It’s the best stroke play finish in any conference championship in program history and tops the previous best of second at the 1999 Sun Belt Conference Championship.
The top-4 teams advance to match play Thursday, and the Red Wolves (-5) will be the top seed and play Texas State (+13), the fourth seed. ULM (+6) will be the second seed and take on third-seeded Marshall (+13). The tie between Texas State and Marshall was broken by calculating the total score among the fifth player in each round for the two tied teams.
Lineups for both semifinal matches will be turned in at 6:30 a.m., and the matches are scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. The Red Wolves and Texas State tee off on the first hole, while ULM and Marshall will tee off the 10th hole. Live coverage on ESPN+ begins at 10 a.m. The winners meet in the championship match in the afternoon.
Joining Schmidt in the top five individually were Jake Lile and Devyn Pappas. Lile and Pappas each carded a 1-over par 73 in the final round to total 2-under par 214 for the championship and a tie for fourth. Jack Maxey had the low round of the day among A-State players at 2-under par 70 to finish up tied for 21st at 5-over par 221. Hugo Ronnberg was 2-over on the final 18 to tie for 33rd with a total of 8-over par 224.
