O’FALLON, Ill. (1/31/25) – Arkansas State women’s tennis moved back into the win column Friday, routing Saint Louis 6-1 at the St. Clair Tennis Club.
A-State (4-2) improved to 4-0 when winning the doubles point, while also picking up five of six singles points against the host Billikens (0-2).
After SLU’s Fiorella Duran and Emmerson White won 6-1 over A-State’s Anna Grigoreva and Carla Muro Castellvi at No. 1, the Red Wolves’ No. 3 pair of Sarah Millard and Hanmare McAslin evened the doubles count with a 7-5 win against Lizzie Barlow and Angelina Joao. Lilly Cvanciger and Abigail Thurmer clinched the doubles point at Court 2, defeating Nicolly Ferreira and Madison Hill.
“We got off to a slow start in doubles, being down on all three courts but we raised our level and managed to get the doubles point, which put us in a very good position to start the singles matches,” McAslin said. “We clearly made use of the momentum and came out with a real bang at the start of singles and we came out being locked in on every point right from the start. I could really feel the positive energy on court today. It wasn’t just about individual performances, but how we all fed off each other’s energy and how everyone showed very good resilience.
Grigoreva put the Scarlet and Black ahead 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Duran, and then Loles Carbo Chova continued her unbeaten singles streak with a 7-6(1), 6-0 triumph against Elizabeth Choate at Court 6.
McAslin clinched the match, winning 6-1, 6-0 against Barlow before Cvanciger made it 5-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ferreira at No. 2. Muro Castellvi won a 6-3, 6-2 decision against Joao, and then the hosts won their lone point at No. 3 when White won 6-1, 6-3 against Millard.
“Winning my singles match felt incredible, but what made it even more special was the way our entire team came together to get the victory,” McAslin added. “It wasn’t just about the individual win—I could feel the energy and support from everyone around me, and that made all the difference. Winning as a team was so much more rewarding than any individual success.”
