JONESBORO, Ark. (4/12/25) – In the final home match of the season, the Arkansas State tennis team treated a stellar crowd at the A-State Tennis Complex to a 5-0 sweep over Southern Miss Saturday morning.

The Red Wolves (12-9, 5-5 SBC) cruised past the Golden Eagles (4-13, 0-10) in doubles and maintained that momentum into singles play. A-State’s 12 wins is tied with the 2009 campaign (12) for the most wins since 13 in 2008, while its five conference victories is the most since 2000 (7).

“We couldn’t have asked for a better way to close out our last home match,” senior Abigail Thurmer said. “Having my girls behind me on my Senior Day was the biggest blessing. They continue to fight tooth and nail, and I cannot wait to see how we will close out the season. Thank you to everyone that came out and supported today! Let’s keep it going.”

A-State earned quick doubles wins on courts 1 and 2 to take an early 1-0 lead in the match. Anna Grigoreva and Carla Muro Castellvi defeated Sakura Sudo and Miranda Xu 6-2 on No. 1 before Thurmer and Lilly Cvanciger teamed up to route Malannia Vashkevich and Talia Wunnenberg 6-1 on Court 2. Sarah Millard and Hanmare McAslin led 4-3 on No. 3 when the point was clinched.

Muro Castellvi, in her first match at the No. 2 position, gave the Scarlet and Black a 2-0 lead when she came out on top against Vashkevich, who retired down 3-0 in the second set. Cvanciger then won 6-1, 6-2 on Court 3 over Xu to make it 3-0.

A-State claimed simultaneous wins on Courts 1 and 5 to clinch the shutout, with Grigoreva topping Hannah Chambers 6-1, 6-2 and Loles Carbo Chova winning a 6-3, 6-1 outcome over Wunnenberg.

Both McAslin and Millard were up a set in their respective matches at the time the contest was halted.
