CONWAY, S.C. (4/6/25) – Arkansas State baseball (14-17, 5-7 SBC) used dominant pitching to shut down Coastal Carolina (23-9, 8-4 SBC) and secure their first ranked win since 2020 in a 2-0 decision on Sunday afternoon at Spring Brooks Stadium.
Jack Hibbard (5-2) recorded his fourth quality start in eight tries, surrendering two hits while striking out eight over 7.0 scoreless innings pitched. Chase Richter entered in relief for the final 2.0 innings, allowing only one hit en route to his third save of the season.
Ashton Quiller (2-for-5) and Cason Campbell (2-for-3) led the bats with multi-hit performances, while the former accounted for the lone RBI of the contest. As a team, the Scarlet and Black recorded six hits and did not commit an error against the Chanticleers.
Quiller doubled down the right field line with two outs in the top of the third, allowing Zac Butler to score uncontested from second base. On the flip side, Hibbard would not surrender a hit until the sixth inning when Coastal Carolina fired a double to left center.
The Chanticleers’ best chance to erase the lead occurred in the seventh following a leadoff double. However, a pair of fly-outs and a strikeout stranded the runner on third to keep the score at 1-0.
With two outs and Wil French on third in the next frame, a wild pitch allowed the Red Wolves’ runs leader to cross the plate and extend the lead to two runs. Neither team would score beyond that point, allowing the Scarlet and Black to salvage the series finale.
The Scarlet and Black earned their first ranked win since defeating 18th-ranked Dallas Baptist 11-7 on February 29, 2020. The Chanticleers are ranked 21st in the latest D1 Baseball poll, and hold a spot in four of the five major polls.
Hibbard earned the win and Richter claimed the save while Riley Eikhoff (5-2) took the loss.
