JONESBORO, Ark. (5/11/24) – Arkansas State baseball (21-28-1, 7-18-1 SBC) was no match for Southern Miss (33-17, 17-9 SBC) on Saturday afternoon at Tomlinson Stadium, falling by a score of 19-3 in the penultimate matchup of the series.

Max Charlton (3-3) made his fourth start of the season, surrendering 11 runs (five earned) on eight hits and a walk while striking out one over an inning. At the plate, Dylan DeButy had the highlight of the day after recording a leadoff home run in the fifth.

The Golden Eagles took advantage of two errors by the Red Wolves in the opening frame, scoring six runs on the miscues, a grand slam, and an RBI-single. None of the runs scored in the first were earned, but Southern Miss held a 6-0 advantage after an inning of play.

The Scarlet and Black surrendered six more runs in the next inning with five coming on three singles and a double. One more run scored during a 6-4-3 double play as the Golden Eagles took a 12-run lead.

The onslaught resumed in the fifth after Slade Wilks scored two on a homer to right field. Two more runs scored on a fielder’s choice and sacrifice fly later in the inning to make the score 17-0.

DeButy opened the bottom frame with a solo-home run to give the Red Wolves their first run of the afternoon, but Wilks got it back with a solo-homer of his own in the top of the sixth.

The Scarlet and Black scored two more runs in the next frame beginning with Blake Burris scoring on a 6-4-3 double play. Jake Henry Williams recorded an RBI-single through the right side as A-State trailed 18-3 going into the final stretch.

Carson Paetow launched the fifth and final home run of the game for either team to cap off a 19-3 victory for the Golden Eagles. Nikko Mazza (8-3) earned the win while Charlton took the loss as the Red Wolves drop the series.
