INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (2/7/25) – Freshman Lilly Cvanciger provided the match-clinching victory Friday night at the Indianapolis Racquet Club, as Arkansas State women’s tennis topped Butler 4-3.  

The Red Wolves (5-3) rallied back after dropping the doubles point, winning four of the first five completed singles matches to top the Bulldogs (0-6). Cvanciger went 2-0 in doubles and singles, including the clincher.

“I’m so glad that we were able to find a way today,” Cvanciger said. “After a close double point, we showed strong team spirit and fought for every match in singles. We knew that it wasn’t going to be easy, but we also knew that it’s possible and that together we’re capable of anything. I’m so happy that I could help my team to get the deciding point and decide this match today. At the same time, I’m so proud of every girl who left everything out there today!”

Butler took a 1-0 lead in the match, winning at Courts 1 and 3 in doubles. Cvanciger and Abigail Thurmer won 6-2 at Court 2, defeating Katie Beavin and Lauren Cook.

Carla Muro Castellvi leveled the match at 1-all when she defeated Emma Beavin 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5, and then Hanmare McAslin topped Brooke Arington on Court 4 by a 6-2, 6-2 count to make it 2-1 A-State. The hosts then tied it at 2-all when Chase Metcalf won 6-1, 6-4 over A-State’s Anna Grigoreva at the No. 1 position.

Sarah Millard broke the deadlock with a win on Court 3 against Katie Beavin, setting up Cvanciger’s match-sealing win on Court 2. The rookie won her third match in a row, downing Norah Balthazor 6-4, 6-4. With the match already decided, Butler picked up a final point on Court 6 when Lauren Cook won a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 decision over A-State’s Loles Carbo Chova.
