JONESBORO, Ark. (3/14/25) – Arkansas State baseball (8-9, 1-0 SBC) opened conference play with a statement, defeating Marshall (10-8, 0-1 SBC) 11-1 in seven innings on Friday afternoon at Tomlinson Stadium-Slayton Family Field.
Collin Maloney (2-2) made his fifth start of the season, holding the Thundering Herd to one earned run on two hits while striking out two batters over 6.1 innings pitched. The right-hander threw five perfect innings before surrendering a walk and hit in the sixth.
Four Red Wolves had multi-hit performances, with Patrick Engskov leading the way at three doubles. Cross Jumper led the team with three RBIs while Wil French, Raul Torres, and Ashton Quiller crossed the plate twice.
With two runs scored, French moves into fifth place in program history for runs scored in a career at 146.
The first inning went to the Scarlet and Black, starting with an RBI-groundout from Daedrick Cail. Engskov and Jake Henry Williams added with a pair of doubles, resulting in a 3-0 advantage going into the second.
Engskov added another run in the third with a two-out double, his second of the game, but Williams would be thrown out at the plate to end the bottom frame.
A-State erupted again in the fourth, starting with a one-out RBI-single through the left side from French that pushed the score to 5-0. Jumper recorded his first RBI in the next at-bat, scoring French on a single up the middle. Cason Tollett joined the action with an RBI-knock to right field, extending the lead to seven runs.
In the fifth, Quiller reached on a fielder’s choice sacrifice bunt that ended with no outs recorded and Engskov scoring. Jumper capped the bottom frame with a two-run double and put A-State in position for a run-rule victory with a 10-0 lead.
The Thundering Herd put their lone run on the board in the top of the sixth, but Daedrick Cail ended the game three frames later on an RBI-single through the right side. Maloney earned the win while Bryce Blevins (2-2) took the loss.
