JONESBORO, Ark. (3/30/25) – Arkansas State women’s tennis battled hard against a top-75 foe, but ultimately dropped a 4-1 decision to 67th-ranked Marshall Sunday at the A-State Tennis Complex.
After dropping the doubles point, A-State (11-7, 4-3 SBC) cut the match score to 2-1 with a singles victory by Loles Carbo Chova, but the Thundering Herd (15-4, 4-3) managed to close out the win with victories on courts 1 and 5.
Marshall claimed a 1-0 lead in the match with wins on Courts 1 and 2. Sophia Hurrion and Aisling McGrane won 6-1 over A-State’s Lilly Cvanciger and Abigail Thumer at No. 2 before Alina Mokrynska and Emma Vanderheyden teamed up to top Anna Grigoreva and Carla Muro Castellvi, 6-3, on Court 1.
Hanmare McAslin and Sarah Millard led 5-4 on Court 3 when the doubles point was clinched.
The visitors made it 2-0 when Vanderheyden won a 6-2, 6-1 outcome against Cvanciger, but the Red Wolves got on the board shortly thereafter when Carbo Chova cruised past Nour El Ouazzani 6-3, 6-4 on Court 6 to make it 2-1.
A 6-2, 6-3 win by Strom over Grigoreva on Court 1 put the Herd up 3-1, and then Hurrion took a tight 6-4, 7-6(5) decision on Court 5 against Millard to clinch the match.
Both Muro Castellvi and McAslin were in third sets on Courts 3 and 4 at the time the match was halted.
