MADISON, Miss. (4/24/25) – The Arkansas State men’s golf team advanced to the Sun Belt Conference Championship match after defeating Georgia Southern 3-2 in the semifinals before falling in the final against Coastal Carolina 3-2.
The decisive match needed a 19th hole where Jack Lee rolled in a lengthy birdie putt to clinch the win for the Chanticleers. A-State closes out the championship ranked No. 70 in the latest NCAA rankings and Sun Belt Conference Individual Champion Jack Maxey will learn of his NCAA Regional destination on Wednesday at 1 p.m. (CT) with the NCAA Championship selection show.
Thomas Schmidt won both match play outings Thursday defeating Parker Claxton of Georgia Southern 7&6 in the semifinal and Max Bengtsson of Coastal Carolina 4&3 in the final. Jake Wallis gave A-State a second win in the final, topping Trace McDonald 4&3. Chris Somerfield fell in the playoff on the 19th hole while Jack Maxey suffered a 5&4 setback to Trey Crenshaw and Drew Sykes defeated Jake Lile 4&2.
Somerfield won the decisive match in the match play semifinal against Georgia Southern downing Hogan Ingram 2&1. Maxey added a 3&2 decision over Edouard Cereto. Wallis came up short against Brycen Jones and Lile fell 3&2 against Brantley Baker to round out the results of the semifinal.
A-State awaits postseason play as a team with a program record stroke average of 285.17. Schmidt holds the single-season program record with a stroke average of 70.86 while Maxey is A-State’s first individual conference champion since 1997.
