KLEK’s Juneteenth in Jonesboro is about celebrating our freedom and independence. We want to make sure that you can enjoy that freedom as long as possible as healthily as possible.
Control Your Blood Pressure and Blood Glucose
Juneteenth in Jonesboro is glad to welcome the NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine at Arkansas State University who will be at the Community Fair on June 18 at University Lions Park.
The college will be bringing their Delta Care-A-Van to the event and conduct free blood pressure and blood glucose screenings for the community. The American Heart Association says that African Americans are more likely to have high blood pressure and suffer from diabetes. This is a great opportunity for members of the community to discover where they stand and learn healthy habits to combat these diseases.
Join in the Fight Against Sickle Cell Disease
Another disease that is prevalent among Americans, especially People of Color, is sickle cell disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 100,000 Americans are impacted with 1 in 365 Black babies being born with it. 1 in more than 16,000 Hispanic-American babies are also born with it. The American Red Cross recently launched an initiative to help combat the disease and they will be at Juneteenth in Jonesboro to provide a way in which you can help.
The American Red Cross will be at the community fair on June 18 at University Lions Park to provide information on a variety of topics, including their sickle cell initiative. The organization will also be accepting blood donations from the community at the Parker Park Community Center from 4:30 to 5:30 P.M., also on June 18.
