MONROE, La. (5/16/24) – Arkansas State baseball’s (21-29-1, 7-19-1 SBC) series opener against ULM (22-30, 8-19 SBC) was suspended in the eighth inning with the Warhawks leading 8-4 on Thursday night at Lou St. Amant Field.
Kole Turner made his ninth start across 17 appearances this season, surrendering two earned runs on three hits and three walks while striking out one over 4.2 innings pitched.
Cason Campbell put the first score on the board for the Red Wolves, landing a shot off the wall in left for an RBI-single in the second. Wil French added another run in the top frame after sending a sacrifice fly to center field as the Scarlet and Black took a 2-0 advantage.
Jack Clark reached home for ULM’s first run of the contest on a groundout from Matt Abshire in the next frame. The Warhawks did not record their first hit of the contest until the next inning.
Hunter Ryan got the run back for A-State in the third after singling through the right side with two outs, bringing in Brandon Hager from second base.
The contest entered a 40-minute weather delay not long after an RBI-double from Easton Winfield. The Warhawks stranded two in scoring position following the restart as the Scarlet and Black held on to a narrow lead.
Ryan drove in Hager once again in the seventh with a single to left field, putting A-State ahead 4-2 going into the final stretch.
The Warhawks were able to break through with three runs in the bottom frame, starting with an RBI-double from Shawn Weatherbee. A pair of RBI-singles from Michelle Artzberger and Jayson Zmejkoski put ULM in front 5-4 as a steady rain continued to fall.
The deficit was extended to three in the bottom of the eighth after Winfield delivered a grounder through the right side for a two-run single. Weatherbee delivered another RBI-knock to centerfield, making the score 8-4 before the rain ramped up.
Lightning in the area forced another delay before the game was ultimately suspended with a runner at first and one out on the board.
