JONESBORO, Ark. (2/1/25) – Arkansas State women’s basketball (14-7, 10-1 SBC) faced resistance from South Alabama (4-17, 0-10 SBC) early in the second half, but managed to pull away for an 80-63 win on Saturday afternoon at First National Bank Arena.
Zyion Shannon led the scoring effort with 22 points while Kennedie Montue (16) and Wynter Rogers (10) also reached double figures. Rogers also led the team in rebounds with 12, securing her second double-double this season and the fourth of her career.
As a team, A-State shot 29-for-70 (41.4 percent) from the floor and 9-for-32 (28.1 percent) from three-point range. The Red Wolves outscored their opponent 20-19 off turnovers, 11-4 off second chances, 21-12 off fast breaks, and 33-23 off the bench.
The Scarlet and Black swiped 20 steals during the contest, tying a season high previously set on November 13, 2024, against Mississippi Valley State. The total ties for the sixth-most steals in a game, and ties for the second most against a Sun Belt foe.
A-State controlled the first quarter, jumping out to an 11-4 lead over the first four minutes of action. After the lead shrunk to five, the Red Wolves ended the quarter with nine of the last 13 points scored with Montue netting the final five.
The Scarlet and Black tallied eight steals in the quarter and scored 16 of their 24 points in the paint, converting only two triples over the first 10 minutes.
Rogers opened the second with a layup while Shannon and Montue connected from deep to open a 20-point advantage with 7:07 to go. After moving ahead 37-18, the momentum shifted to the Jaguars as they finished the period on an 8-0 run.

South Alabama maintained their momentum by scoring nine of the first 13 points of the third, cutting the lead down to six. The Red Wolves’ advantage fell to five points before a free throw from Crislyn Rose and a layup from Kyanna Morgan pushed it back to eight.
Shannon scored the Red Wolves’ last eight points of the penultimate quarter, pushing the lead back to double digits with the score standing at 57-45 going into the fourth.
Shannon and Rogers converted a pair of three-point plays in the opening minute to claim an 18-point advantage on the Jaguars. South Alabama cut the lead to 14 with 8:12 remaining, but a 13-4 run capped by a pair of triples from Shannon put A-State in front 77-54 at the 4:11 mark.
Nine of the final 12 points went for the Jaguars, but it would not be enough as the Red Wolves clinched their sixth winning streak of 10-plus games in program history. A-State now sits five three-pointers and two three-point attempts away from establishing single-season team records.
The Scarlet and Black have converted 220 shots from beyond-the-arc this season, four short of the record established in 1997-98.
