JONESBORO, Ark. (3/28/25) – Arkansas State baseball (12-13, 3-4 SBC) claimed a three-run advantage after two innings versus ULM (11-15, 1-6 SBC) and held on late to clinch a 4-3 victory on Friday afternoon at Tomlinson Stadium.
Collin Maloney made his seventh start of the season, surrendering two runs (all earned) on three hits while striking out one over 3.1 innings pitched. Jelle van der Lelie (2-1) and Chase Richter entered in relief, with the former striking out five over 3.2 innings and the latter throwing a shutout over the final two.
Patrick Engskov tied with Daedrick Cail and Cross Jumper for the team lead in hits (2), and led the team with two RBIs.
ULM struck first with an RBI-groundout in the opening frame, but Engskov’s two-run single in the bottom of the inning put A-State in front. Cail batted in another run with a single to centerfield before being thrown out at second, resulting in a 3-1 advantage after an inning of action.
Jumper recorded an RBI-knock to right field in the second, scoring Wil French and extending the lead to three runs. The Warhawks would not respond until the fourth inning, when a single up the middle added one run to the scoreboard.
Van der Lelie entered the game in relief during the top frame and proceeded to strike out five batters before exiting in the eighth. Despite the strong performance, ULM received one unearned run in the seventh following back-to-back throwing errors, making the score 4-3 in crunch time.
Richter entered and proceeded to close the contest with no hits or walks allowed, securing the first win in the series and snapping a three-game losing skid in conference play. Van der Lelie earned the win and Richter claimed the save while Landon Grigg (0-6) took the loss.
