JONESBORO, Ark. (5/10/24) – Arkansas State baseball (21-27-1, 7-17-1 SBC) was unable to hold on to an early advantage against Southern Miss (32-17, 16-9 SBC), falling by a score of 5-2 on Friday night at Tomlinson Stadium.

Kole Turner made his eighth start on the mound for A-State, surrendering two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three over 5.2 innings pitched. Blake Burris had the highlight of the night, recording an inside-the-park home run in the sixth inning.

Allen Grier brought in the first run of the contest in the third, firing a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed Cason Campbell to score uncontested.

Davis Gillespie led the response for Southern Miss in the sixth after tying the game with an RBI-double that reached the wall in left field. Carson Paetow batted in Gillespie on a single to right, giving the Golden Eagles their first lead of the contest at 2-1.

Their lead would not last as Blake Burris took advantage of a collision between the left and center fielders, making it all the way home on an inside-the-park home run. It was the first time a Red Wolf recorded a round-tripper that did not leave the park since Tyler Duncan did it on April 11, 2021 at Louisiana.

Despite the rare feat, Gillespie recorded another RBI-double before Paetow sent a two-run shot to the bullpen behind right field, giving Southern Miss a three-run advantage.

A 5-4-3 double play crippled the Scarlet and Black’s comeback bid as the Golden Eagles claimed a 5-2 victory. Billy Oldham (8-1) earned the win and Colby Allen (4) claimed the save while Walker Williams (0-1) took the loss.
