DENTON, Texas (3/23/25) – North Texas’ Jasper Floyd sank a buzzer-beating jumper Sunday night inside the UNT Coliseum, as the Arkansas State men’s basketball team saw its stellar season end in a 65-63 loss to the Mean Green in the second round of the NIT.
A-State (25-11) knotted up the contest on a layup by Taryn Todd with 10 seconds to play, but Floyd lifted the Mean Green (26-8) to the NIT quarterfinals with his game-winning basket.
The Red Wolves shot 36.9 percent (24-65) for the contest, including 8-for-27 from 3-point range. Izaiyah Nelson led the Red Wolves with his 10th double-double of the season, tallying 16 points and 14 rebounds. Kobe Julien added 15 points, while Todd had 12 points – all in the second half – to go along with five assists to no turnovers. Derrian Ford was the fourth A-State player in double figures with 10 points.
Floyd and Latrell Jossell scored 18 apiece to lead UNT, which shot 43.9 percent (25-57) from the floor.
The hosts got out to an early 10-4 lead, but a Julien trey capped a 5-0 run to pull the score back within 10-9. UNT again took a two-possession lead, however A-State fought back to tie it at 15 on a three by Ford.
UNT pushed its lead out to 23-15 with an 8-0 run, which was ended by a Nelson slam. The Mean Green led by as much as nine in the half, but the Red Wolves finished strong to end the half, which ended with UNT holding a 34-33 edge.
North Texas opened the second half on a 7-0 run to stretch its lead out to 41-33 and then led by as much as nine with 13:55 remaining in the contest. Julien and Todd then combined for an 8-0 run to make it a 45-44 affair, and then the Mean Green opened its lead back out to eight.
Dyondre Dominguez then knocked down a trey with 2:27 remaining to cap a game-tying 8-0 run, knotting the score at 57-all. UNT then took a two-possession lead before Todd tied it at 63-all with back-to-back scores inside the final 25 seconds. UNT then fought through the Red Wolves’ defense and found Floyd, who sank the game-winning mid-range jumper.
