JONESBORO, Ark. (2/15/25) – Arkansas State men’s basketball led at the half, but ultimately dropped a 71-70 decision to Troy Saturday night inside First National Bank Arena.
The Red Wolves (19-8, 10-4 SBC) won the rebounding battle 43-35, but the Trojans (17-9, 10-4) outscored A-State 41-36 in the final 20 minutes to earn the win.
A-State shot 38.5 percent (25-65) from the field and went 8-for-26 from 3-point range (.308). From the foul line, the Scarlet and Black converted at a 66.7-percent clip (12-18). Terrance Ford Jr. led the way with 18 points on a season-high four made 3-pointers. Izaiyah Nelson recorded his third double-double of the year with 14 points and a game-high 14 boards, while Taryn Todd also tallied 14 points with seven rebounds.
Troy shot 38.6 percent (22-57) for the night and was 19-for-27 from the foul line (.704), led by a game-high 20 points from Jackson Fields, who connected on 5-of-7 from beyond the arc.
A-State struck first, and neither team led by more than a possession for the first 10 minutes until a 9-0 run put the Red Wolves ahead 21-14 following a Todd basket. That lead grew to nine after a pair of free throws by Dyondre Dominguez. Troy cut the lead back down to four, but Ford Jr. drained a trey to make it a seven-point game with a minute to go in the half. Fields scored before the half for Troy, but A-State led 34-30 at intermission.
The Trojans tied it at 42-all inside the first five minutes of the second half, and then Thomas Dowd sank a triple to put them up 45-42 with 13:57 left. The teams traded leads on baskets by Ford Jr. and Tayton Conerway, putting Troy up one with under four minutes left. Joseph Pinion put the Red Wolves back up by two with 2:24 to play with a three, but Troy used a 7-0 run to reclaim the lead for good.
