JONESBORO, Ark. (4/29/24) – Arkansas State Athletics has announced it will host a watch party with its Sun Belt Conference championship men’s golf team during the 2024 NCAA Division 1 Championships Selection Show on Wednesday, May 1.
Open to the public, the event will be held at The Social, located at 1004 Chancery Lane in Jonesboro. The men’s golf team and staff will arrive by 12:30 p.m. ahead of the show airing at 1 p.m. on the GOLF channel.
The Red Wolves have already secured an automatic bid into the NCAA Championships after claiming their second Sun Belt title over the last five seasons. A-State will learn of its regional-tournament destination and seeding during the show.
Six 54-hole regional tournaments will be conducted to determine the 30 qualifying teams and six individuals (not on those qualifying teams) who will compete in the finals. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals (not on those teams) will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals (not on those teams). The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the finals.
All 30 teams and six individuals will complete 54 holes of stroke play. Following 54 holes of competition, the top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team will advance for one additional day of stroke play to determine the top eight teams for match-play competition and the 72-hole stroke-play individual champion. The top eight teams after 72 holes of play will be placed into a bracket thereafter.
The 2024 national championships will be hosted by the University of Texas at Austin and held at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
In team match-play competition, a total of five points will be available with one point being awarded for each individual match. Winning teams will advance to the semifinals and subsequently, the finals. The first team to win three points within the team match will advance, or in the case of the final match, be declared the national champion.
The six regional sites include The University of Texas Club in Austin, Texas, hosted by the University of Texas; University Club in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, hosted by LSU; UNC Finley Course in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, hosted by the University of North Carolina; The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, California, hosted by the University of San Diego, Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, California, hosted by Stanford University; and Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Indiana, hosted by Purdue University.
While the Red Wolves won their second ever Sun Belt title this year, it was their third all-time conference championship after also winning the American South Conference in 1989. They will now make their seventh all-time team appearance in an NCAA Regional and first since 2021. A-State is the only Sun Belt Conference team with multiple conference titles since the league began match play in 2016.
